Next week, on November 2nd to be precise, I will be turning 20.
(Remember: 40 is the new 30 is the new 20?)…
No, dang it, no more fairy tales: I WILL BE 40. Middle aged. I will be a dried-up old prune. And I think I will enjoy it immensely. Although it will be my first birthday without my Papa calling me early in the morning and singing Lang zal ze leven for me, which will make it a very difficult day indeed, I’m planning a weekend of festivities only my fellow stitchers will understand. Yup, you’ve guessed it: I’m going to lock myself in my cozy little cabin (Pelle is with the ex this weekend), finish a pair of socks and
I’m sure the non-sock-knitters (aka the toastiness-deprived) among you will be relieved to learn of this plan. Although, you know, I have NO business starting a new sampler with all of my UFO drawers overflowing, but who cares. I’m nearly 40, I can do what I want.
Now, a couple of things about these socks:
1) I’m using one ball Scheepjes Invicta Colour, striping it with itself by knitting from both ends of the ball, as I’ve seen done on Ravelry.com. It’s not a lot of fun to knit with this yarn, because I think it came straight from the sheep (you know, after it’d been on a visit to the Lamb to the Dyer Salon) without coming across a spinning contraption of any kind. The stripes weren’t working for me, either. I mean, in a ball of dark purple, dark red, bright green, bright blue and bright orange, how did the dark red and the purple cross each other, leaving the more cheerful colours entirely out of the equation?
2) Stripes are surprisingly difficult to do well when knitting. Hence the supreme wonkiness of the first sock. The second sock looks a lot better.
3) I now need stripey socks in every imaginable colourway - and every unimaginable one, as well - or I shall never be happy again.
4) This colourway is yummy, I’m sure you’ll agree, and it’s called Grape Arbour. As I was knitting along (well, plodding, really), I was thinking of possible sock names to go with the name of the yarn, the look of the sock and the experience of the knitting. At first, I tended towards Chateau Chit, because of the crappiness of the entire thing, but now that I’ve started the second sock and it’s starting to all turn out exactly as I wanted it, I’m leaning towards naming this pair Chateau Chic. What think you, honeybuns?
Alrighty, off to discipline my unruly cat before he unravels my SIP... Pantoooooooooooooooef!!!!!!
Yours still thirty-somethingly,
Annemarie.

That sounds like the perfect weekend! Happy Birthday in advance - I think I shall adopt the new birthday counting system as well and be 35 next year.
Happy early birthday! Ah, 40 is still young! Enjoy your weekend, sounds like you have a good plan! Now which one of those samplers in the pic are you starting? All of them? :D
You don't become 40, you'll become thirty-ten! :) At least I'll do next year...
And please, stay a cross-stitcher who knits socks now and then.
Happy early birthday!
Love the flowers underneath THE socks.
Which one which one???? There are 5 there. Ooh you tease. I really REALLY want a SL sampler. Love that sock wool. You're getting good! x
O ja, en de sokken worden natuurlijk ook heel bijzonder!
ik kom graag nog terug om je te feliciteren!
Hope you have a happy birthday and I can't wait to see your sampler start ;-).
Do the names Rachel Allen and Gennett Clapps mean anything to you? By looking at your sampler stash they just might. I bought two VERY OLD Scarlet Letter sampler kits with those two names last month at the Historical Society Flea Market. It was run by some lovely ladies whose average age was 112. Each package contains chart, linen and thread (and needle!) for $.50....YES, FIFTY CENTS!!!!
Knitting from both ends of the ball...HATE YOU!!!!
Only 40!! you young thing, age is so unimportant, anyway hope the day will be fantastic starting your sampler(s). Yes it will be a strange feeling that your Papa is not there for you Annemarie.
The sock tale has really gripped you there, and I do think it's a lovely colour really, different colours on each sock is so vintage. .)
Have a good birthday and do anything you like, just let us know!! Be good, because I won't be (is my motto) LOL.
LANG ZAL JE LEVEN!!
You're only as old as you feel, and even though I have been 40 for 4 years, I still feel 28! As one of my aunt's told me, if you avoid mirrors, you'll never know how old you "really" are.
I vote for calling the socks Little MissMatched. Check out the store, and you'll see why.
It is difficult to celebrate a special day without a loved one - but knowing that they more than anyone would want you to be happy and celebrate, it is best to have "the time of your life" and enjoy your birthday - 40! You are still a baby!
Sounds like you have the perfect birthday weekend plans...I'd love to join you!
Love your newest socks. Noro Kureyon sock yarn is much like that, straight from the sheep...but the colors'll get you to succomb every time. I share that need for a vast stripey sock assortment, lol!
Wishing you a Very Happy 40th, I'm sure you're getting better with age, LOL ;)
Happy birthday, but wait until you reach 54, it's even more fun, enjoy your planned day
Regards
marlene
40 is a great age! 50 was much harder for me. Weren't my grandparents old and they were 50-something?? Love your new socks. I learned using the 4 double-pointed needles but like the circular ones better.
Beautiful socks Annemarie! I love that yarn!! Happy early birthday!! I'm not too far behind you - I'll be 36 on November 1st. Where does the time go??? :)
Early Happy Birthday wishes Dear Annemarie! 40 huh? You young chick you.
Please know your Papa will be singing from Heaven. If you listen really hard you will hear him.
Love those Silly Socks girl! But I am very glad to hear that you have not given up stitching. I, for one, would be very disappointed.
Sending warm hugs to you and Pelle!
and to Pantoef - run, kitty, run - she is after you.
Happy Birthday to you, dear Annemarie! Wishing a fabulous day to a very special stitching friend!! (I agree with Kathy A's comment. Listen carefully and I think you will hear your father singing. . . .)
My birthday finishing-stitching spree didn't work out so well last week. Can I come and hang out with you and try again? Then again, the jet lag would probably do me in, since I'm **OLDER** than you (48, to be exact . . . --ahem-- I'm 48 years old, NOT 48 years OLDER. Just needed to clarify.)
How about Sunrise, Sunset because of all the colors. Lovely stripes! What kind of shoes do you wear with gorgeous socks like that? I'm a clog-lover, myself, and it's a shame that I don't knit socks. Happy, happy birthday.
Enjoy your alone time with your yarn and your coffee! Happy birthday!
As long as we are still here, the number after our name does not matter. I always tell friends I have a higher "score" than they do. I lost my Dad shortly before my monumental 50th, so I understand your feelings. Enjoy your special day!
OMG; a "Real Scorpio" (an old joke from a job at the bookstore; all the lady employees were November Scorpios...except for the Evil Boss who was also an Evil Male...and he was an "October Scorpio" aka "Fake Scoripio". ;)
I'll be 28 on the 12th, myself. (Boo; I want to stay with the Lucky Seven!)
I think your birthday plans sound just as lovely as that sock yarn! :D
Not being a knitter myself, much of the knitting and crocheting being done by our blogging friends gets a quick look and a pass from me. Only you with your wit and humor could get me to actually read entire posts about such projects. :)
Your birthday plans sound perfect to me and I can't wait to see some sampler progress! Happy, happy birthday - and ENJOY!
Your socks looks great!
And I don't see why you can't turn 20 on the 2nd. I myself am planning to stop aging at 26 and then just stay that way.
Happy Birthday Annemarie (from someone who has already passed the big 4-0 and can barely see it in the distance ;) ) Your plans sound excellent - I hope you have fun!
Funny you mention your upcoming birthday as I was just eyeing my birthday calender today, which showed up when I cleared off the kitchen counter. What's it doing in the kitchen? No idea, but that's why I dropped the ball on all the October birthdays. Anyway, you cannot say you're a dried up prune because I'm 41 and am far from dried up. All my older female friends assure me that the fun is just starting when we hit our 40's. And they're right - I mean, just look at me up to my elbows in bread dough, my ankles in chickens, and my knees in kids? Wahoo! :D :D :D
40 jaar jong - Gefeliciteerd Annemarie. Jouw verjaardag plannen klinken perfect. Mooie patronen heb jij jezelf gegeven. Welke ga je eerst stitchen?
hugs, Margaret
Have a wonderful weekend and 'happy birthday' for the 2nd! Enjoy your new stitching start, look forward to seeing progress pics. Loving the sock progress!
happy birthday to you! happy birthday to you! en lang zal ze leven...
a special birthday today: 20! wow, your life is just beginning, remember?
I hope you can really enjoy this day with your loved ones and with (good) memories.
Happy birthday!! I hope you enjoyed your weekend. Big hugs, too; I know all the first 'special' days after losing a loved one are particularly bittersweet.
Happy Birthday!!! Hmmmmm...we are both Scorpios born on the same day....you must be like me...a fabulous person through and through. LOLL LOL LOL LOL
Oh no, you won't do that, giving up stitching, I mean. I would miss your lovely pictures of your various WIPs, lol. Honestly, I would.
Happy belated birthday to you and I hope you were having a great day.
Sorry for the somewhat belated Happy Birthday wishes. I perfectly understand your point about it being a bit of a sad time without your Papa calling and remembering the day you were born - I shared exactly the same feeling 5 years ago...
You are so much better at 40 than you were at 30 than you were at 20... Believe me ! And it is only going to get better !
Hugs, V.
