The (not so) Young and the Restless

Wow. So I guess you’re all quite impressed with my progress on The Blue Lady:o) Well, she is quite large. Only, don’t tell me that every time you see her, because I get a little intimidated when you do that, resulting in me asking myself what the *humph* I’m doing, working on such a huge piece. I haven’t touched her since my last post. You all really scared me.

Just one more thing about her, before I move on: some of you were wondering how many shades of blue are used to make this lady so blue. The answer will probably be more of a shock to you than the size of her, because the total number of colours used in this piece is an astonishing... nine. In total. For the entire piece. Five shades of blue, two tans, one gray, one pink. The illusion of so much colour is created by using different stitches. The face and the dress, for instance, are worked in half cross stitches, so the colours look a little lighter than when they are worked in regular cross stitches. Also, you can see where the threads are tucked into the backs of other stitches, giving the illusion at the front that the threads are hand-dyed, with lighter and darker strands. Hm. I think I may have talked myself into working on her some more :o)

The reason I’m here today is because of the Totally Useless SAL. Honestly, I don’t know where all the orts came from this month, because I hardly did any stitching, it seems!

I will admit I’m not a Scrooge when I stitch. A bit of a thread-waster, I am. Maybe that’s why my ort cup overfloweth sometimes.
The thing is, I’m extremely restless on the crafting front at the moment. Yesterday, I suddenly found myself kitting up an embarrassing number of projects and not wanting to start any of them. Today, I turned one (!!) of my WIP/UFO drawers upside down with a view to doing some rigorous eliminating of projects I’m never going to finish. I made a pile of projects I was going to cut up in order to rescue some good pieces of fabric, and then throw the rest (with hours and hours worth of stitching on them) away. I started off pretty light-heartedly, but as I progressed, my belief that this was the right thing to do started wavering. In the end, I just tucked everything back in the drawer. What is your experience with this sort of feeling? Do you act on it? Do you clear out your UFO drawers every once in a while and throw out the things you know you will never finish? And if you have been that soldier, have you had any regrets?

Although I’m pretty restless when it comes to crafting, I’m in rather a peaceful state of mind right now. If not zen-like, then very nearly so. In the evenings, I just want to read - study, really, but I won’t tell you what, because I'm sure you're all going to be laughing at me. It’s a very long time ago that I did any studying, and I’m really enjoying it. Not when this happens, though:

Pantoef, Pain in the Posterior par excellence. In fact, I got Pipien as an addition to the family to keep Pantoef busy and out of my way when I’m working, but Pien remains blissfully unaware of her job description, because meanwhile, on the other side of the living room:

Ooh! I got the Birds from the framer’s! I’m not entirely sure if the frame is exactly what I wanted... No, actually, I’m definitely sure this is not at all what I wanted, but I only thought of that when I got it home. Maybe I’ll go and have it re-framed some time. What do you think?

Look at me, giving you so much homework with all of my questions! The thing is, I really care about what you have to say. Your comments always make me happy, whether they make me think, or :o) or :-) or :-D

My weekend starts now, so I’d better be off and do some stitching. Or knitting. Or crocheting. Or reading. Or studying. Or... sleeping?

Yours restlessly,
Annemarie.

Die lijst kan zeker beter! Deze voegt niet veel toe aan het borduurwerk... Die mooie vogels verdienen volgens ij beter!

Your kitties are so cute! Too bad Pipien doesn't know the job description. lol! I think the frame on your Birds is quite pretty! But you're the one who has to live with it. My WIP/UFOs. Sigh. I tend to pile them up and there they stay. lol! I hate to get rid of anything.

No answers from me Annemarie LOL.
The framed birds do look really nice:))
Have a great weekend whatever you get up too.

You are so funny - you make me smile!!

I actually like the frame that you picked for your piece - simple and it doesn't take away from the design - just frames it. I'm afraid that if you had anything different it might take away from the center.

And yes, I've had moments like you - go through the stash with reckless abandon throwing things in the circular file or the file to possibly sold. After about an hour I second guess myself and slow down and eventually stop and like you, return them to their respective hiding places - possibly to be looked at again.

I wouldn't bother with re-framing unless it really bothers you. I would just be so happy to have it framed! Great progress on your SAL. ;)

I love the frame! I think the green and the style go perfect with your beautiful stitching.

I have cut away not to be stitched again pieces a few times, and in the end I had no regrets. If you have any doubts I wouldn't do it though.

Have a fun weekend whatever you decide to do! Your kitties are very cute!

Oh those lovely cats. Of course they can do no wrong.... at least not in their own eyes! I am quite the procrastinator myself lately. Joe has another word for it that I won't share here.

What a great post. Yep, Blue Lady is calling to you. Give her some love!
Any time I look at my old WIP pile I just sigh and stash it back where it came from.
I agree with Deb - I like the simple frame - it showcases your beautiful work.
I am so happy for you that you are in a semi - zenlike state. I hope you get to stay there for some time.

I do exactly what you did. Take them all out, sure in my resolve to eliminate patterns and end up with everything back in the drawer.

One of the good ladies who works at the LNS always says, regarding frames, the wider the better. I think that works out better for them monetarily, but she might be on to something. I don't mind what you have, but I think a superwide barn board gray would be fabulous.

I too tend to go through things (my stash, my UFOs, books) and make a big ole pile to get rid of. Then I think better of it. I should probably learn to let them go!

I really like the birds frame - I think it's nice and simple. What did you decide you'd rather see?

I'm so curious about what you're studying - do tell.

I have learned that if I am really sure I am not going to finish something to toss it away! I have never regretted this. I find there is more where that came from, life is too short, and I don't want to work on something I don't want to work on. LOL! Usually the things I end up tossing are things that were trendy at the time and now I'm over it. The classics tend to stay. Does that help at all?

Though it isn't the prettiest frame ever created, it does fill that 'Danish modern' sort of style of the stitched piece, IMHO.

I do make these piles of useless UFOs to throw away. Then I don't throw them away, but neither do I put them back. I think if I leave out, open to shame and embarrassment, they will eventually skulk off on their own accord and I won't be hit by the guilt of throwing out so much partially-stitched stuff.

How does Pipien tuck herself up so tightly?!

I don't know if I could throw old wips away or not. Never tried. Your kitties are so pretty as is your framed birds - the frame, while maybe not exactly what you wanted does appear to match the green perfectly!
Have fun studying or reading or knitting or crocheting!

Oh yes, the Blue Lady. I loved to see her pulled out again in your last post.
I have to admit that I love the frame of the Fremme Birds. But Anna's idea is really good as well.

I don't have many UFOs, just about 5 or 6, and they are all BAPs. And I know that I want to and will finish them one day. Besides one, which is one of Chatelaine's mysteries. I know that i will never finish it but I can't bring myself to throwing it out. But I often try to go through my mags and charts to see what I want to keep. I often end up putting them all back like you. But sometimes I actually manage to to sort some things out. Maybe it all depends on my mood. When I'm in a real decluttering mood I could declutter every room of our house so that there would only be half of our belongings in the end, lol.

I don't think I have ever thought about getting rid of unfinished projects - I'd worry about regretting it later but that's just me!

Your kitties look so cute and comfy!

As for the frame - I love the color and the simplicity of it. Sometimes moldings will have a few different widths available (perhaps with a slightly different profile)and I think perhaps a wider version of the same frame would look lovely too. I also like Anna's idea. Live with it a bit and see if it grows on you!

Yay for cat pictures!

I'm expiring from the curiosity of wanting to know what you're studying.

I don't have such a huge de-ufo-ing experience in my history, but for lack of a better term I'd say you got overwhelmed by "perfectionism". spend 20 minutes a week on this ufo de-clutter, rather than trying to do it all in one fell (grand, decisive, trama-inducing) swoop. Pick up an in-question item, decide what to do (toss? Crop? Charity?) with it right then, and do it. Then be done! Yay! Basically, limit the number of times you pick something up to only once (no double jeopardy allowed!), and only do one item (or set a countdown timer on this task and stop to go do something fun when you finish it. Celebrate a small progress rather than getting bogged down in "perfectly" decommissioning them. (Since you couldn't "perfectly" complete them, you must "perfectly weed them out = Not how you want to think.)

You are right that The Birds' Frame isn't working. It deserves better. :D I seem to remember you saying your framer was very reasonable? That's a good thing. :)

Your comments about your cats make me laugh because I am in the same boat as you are. I have four and at least one of them is always trying to "help" me do whatever I am doing.

I am curious as to the breed of your cats? They are very pretty/handsome and look quite petite. Pien looks to have curly fur and both cats look like they have curled whiskers.

I really like the framing for Birds. I think the color accents the green in the design perfectly. I sometimes second guess myself too so I understand how frustrating it is. Give it some time, you might just decide that you really like it!

When I go through my starts intending to weed a few out, I usually end up doing exactly what you did, put them back. Once in a while though, I actually take the scissors to something. I have not regretted any of those decisons. So my advice would be that you will know when the time is right, no need to decide all at once. Just pick one or two things at a time to recyle.

Glad to read that you are in a better frame of mind. I find having a focus, like studying, helps.

Take care...

I have a hard time getting rid of anything related to stitching, although I did actually throw a way a couple of projects that I had started on Aida many years ago. If I actually want to stitch them in the future, I know that I would prefer linen. Most of the time when I go through my stash, I do a really great job of flipping through it and making a big mess. 99% of the time, everything winds up back where it was before I wasted time going through it.

I'm amazed that there are do few different colours in the Blue Lady, I would have guessed a lot more.

Your cats are so beautiful, I love those big eyes of Pantoef's, and the expression of innocence as well.

I quite like the frame - my only change would be to make it wider (it wouldn't be a critical issue anyway), the style looks perfect to me.
