Why selfish stitching works (and unselfish stitching doesn't)

A couple of weeks ago, Harmien and I decided to do a personal Halloween-themed floss ring tag exchange. I thought that was a good idea. Harmien is my best friend. she knows me, she will probably count on me not making the deadline. In fact, she knows I won't make it before I myself discover that there is no way I will. It doesn't help that I have a child who will try his darndest to never, ever have me make a deadline, but - as Harmien so rightfully pointed out - I shouldn't blame him for my own inability to not procrastinate. It's not his fault that he's been ill for more than a week. He can't help it that his stomach upset led to a runny nose, inflamed ears and wheezing lungs and kept me up for nigh-on a week so. And it's not Vonna's fault that I didn't finish the exchange on time either. No, it's not. The fact that she came up with this Me, Myself & I Neighbourhood and Blog is no reason for me to abandon everything I was working on to start planning yet another neighbourhood. It is nobody's fault, except my own, that Harmien arrived on Friday bearing the Halloween Exchange she so industriously finished on time, and that I had nothing to show in return, except a couple of sad pieces of fabric containing even sadder half-finished stitcheries. What I'm trying to say in a very roundabout way, is that I received some lovely, lovely gifts from Harmien...

...and that she didn't get anything from me. I feel bad. Especially because these are such beauties that I can't stop drooling over. Thank you, Harmien, and I can't tell you how sorry I am that you will have to wait for another week :o((((

Okay, enough of that. There was actually something I could give Harmien. It was a gift I stitched for her and Erik, as a sort of (very meager) thank you gift for everything they did for me this year:

Dear Friend by Blackbird Designs, adapted slightly to make room for our initials, and for the extra 'S' at the end (the original says 'Dear Friend'). The heart at the right is stitched in Queen's stitches. A first, and also a last for me, to be perfectly frank. Well, at least it lends the piece a sort of... primitive, school sampler-like look. The picture is appalling. The fabric was, apparently, mounted on a white board, which shines through because of the flash of the camera. I don't think you can actually see it IRL.

Another finish I picked up from the framer's is Herb Garden by Little House Needleworks. What a sweety, huh? And such a quick stitch! I love it to bits.

And now for my Me, Myself & I Neighbourhood. Like most builders in this new neighbourhood, I haven't been able to sleep properly since this project was set up, so during the very few hours that Pelle wasn't gasping for breath or throwing up or crying, I actually lay awake thinking of houses to build in my neighbourhood, poems and sayings and beasties and trees, and I think I'm mostly done planning. As to the name of my neighbourhood, I haven't quite decided if it will be ' Woodsy Wanderings' or 'Wacky Woodlands'. What do you think? I think I prefer 'Woodsy Wanderings', because I'm not planning anything too wacky right now. It's going to be a rather primitive affair, though, lots of Workbasket Designs and La-D-Da. I've found a poem to go around the design in a border (YES! A border!), but I'm waiting for the collection of poems I ordered before I share it with you, because no-one on the internet seems to know exactly how the poem goes. Barbara, for your information, it's a poem by e e cummings.

One more thing before I start dinner: I had wanted to explain, in my previous post, that even though my Green Award went to four ladies who happened to be mothers of children, I didn't mean to say that ladies with no children don't make me green with envy every once in a while. Rest assured, ladies, you certainly do. It's just that, I have enough work raising 'only' one child, and I cannot for the life of me imagine raising more and still having time to stitch, design, work, etc. On the other hand, when I hear of the trouble fur babies can cause, I can only say I'm glad I have a baby of the non-furry variety to take care of :o)

Next time, I hope to show you at least part - if not all - of my Halloween Exchange for Harmien. I'm not making any promises, though. Not ever again.

Oh! Which collection of cummings poetry are you getting??? I'm all excited for you. He's just so incredible. I've actually designed a chart that features one of his poems. Hey, maybe that's what I'll go work on right now.

Oh, before I go get sidetracked, I want to say "WOW". Harmien is so talented and such a fabulous friend. Yay for your goodies!! ENJOY!

See, I get sidetracked and forget what I'm doing. I totally forgot to say how much I love what you made for Harmien and Erik and how nicely your framing turned out. This is the framer you mentioned a little while ago?

I enjoyed your story, and no off course you're not excused by such an ill child... Is he doing better, by the way, it sounds awful!

Love the LHN, love the Blackbird, love the gifts you got. Well, I'm not the best finish-on-time-person myself (but I'm so wise not to give me deadlines...)

Isn't it wonderful when we have great friends who know how we are and love us anyway? Besides you gave her the most beautiful gift! Even if it wasn't what she was expecting. I think you're holding your own in the friendship thing. ;)

Oh An, I am so sorry to hear that Pelle has been under the weather. I hope he is now on the mend and his poor mother can get some rest.
Harmien's stitching is absolutely gorgeous. You lucky girl.

So much beautiful stitching! I love your Herb Garden, and the verse on this is so sweet. The piece you made for your friends is beautiful, and I am sure it is a treasure to them. Your Halloween gifts are wonderful! What an incredibly creepy and awesome witch, and I love that the floss tag is different on both sides. Everything is very beautiful! (I hope your little boy feels better soon!)

Love Harmien's gifts to you. Love your "Dear Friend(s)" to her and Erik. Don't love doing queen's stitches but love the way they look when finished. Hate deadlines, too. (I'm betting you'll come through on yours soon.)

Sorry Pelle hasn't been feeling well. Hope he's on the mend.

One of my all-time favorite little poems is an e.e. cummings... wonder if it will be the same one?! I might have to steal your idea and use that poem somewhere in my neighborhood. Hmmm.

Perfect finishes! I just love that little bunny in the herb garden :)

Harmien's halloween goodies are great!

Ack! Hit publish too soon. I meant to send also my best wishes that Pelle is feeling better very soon! Sickness is sure rough on little kids and almost as rough on the moms, I think, so I hope you are able to get some rest as well :)

Deadlines are just difficult things - esp when you are waiting for the creative moment to arrive or a block of free time.

Beatiful exchange from harmien & I'm sure you'll find a fabulous project for her -- before halloween : )

Enjoy the day

I think you can be easily forgiven for the lack of a Halloween exchange since you stitched a truly gorgeous gift for Harmien and Erik! Dear Friends is such a lovely piece and obviously very heartfelt. And I love the floss tags Harmien stitched for you! How did she get the PS leaflets so soon? I only just got mine...and started one of them too.

I hope Pelle is much better soon.

What a lovely piece you stitched for Harmien and Erik! I really like the exchange you got from Harmien as well. Those are Priarie Schooler designs aren't they? Hmm, now my mind is digging through the pile of ideas locked up in there. You have such a lot of finishes...way more then me.
I hope Pelle is feeling better soon.

I hope that cute little guy is well by now!!
The stitching is perfect and I did notice that neat pumpkin that is holding it up.
No deadlines for me. Too much stress.
I can't wait to see the blue prints for the construction of the suburbs!
Take care.

Oh, you are so right-- that Vonna is evil. She keeps coming up with these brilliant ideas that lead us all astray! :)

Congrats on all the beautiful stitching! And healthy thoughts for you house.

Oh, An, I still owe Harmien a finished Voodoo Girl! She stares at me every day..unfinished. I'm so scared to make her into a pincushion..scared I'll mess her up..so poor Harmien is still waiting for her. She's been waiting for the whole Summer!!! What am I going to do!!??? I've been tempted to just send her unfinished with every conceiveable finishing thing I can think of and beg Harmien to finish her, herself. HELP!!!
Hanging my head down very low, Deb
PS: Hope Pelle is feeling better now. And, I love your stitched piece for H. and E. Do send it before you feel awful as I do!!!:(

Hi An - looky, I am here!! Spent the afternoon with Mom at the hospital, and now enduring Tropical Storm Hanna - so why not stitch and go online, right?? LOL All of us understand and do not care about your problems with deadlines ;-) I am one of the ones who truly cannot believe you are doing another neighborhood, though - but at least it is one that just involves yourself ;-) Pretty gifts from Harmien and to her as well :-) And your LHN is also framed so beautifully!

Did I ever tell you how much I enjoy reading your blog, LOL :) Every time you've updated I want to take a cup of tea and sit down and relax and start reading and savouring your words :) I LOVE your writing :)

You've stitched a beautiful gift for Harmien and Erik, it's lovely. The other framed piece is such a beauty too. Lovely Halloween gifts from Harmien!!

Oh I love the Dear Friend piece - it is so beautiful! I am having a hard time keeping up with deadlines myself these days, so I think I may be opting out of exchanges and RRs in the future - just keeping up with my one RR, and my two SALs. Whew! That's work!

Awww you're so sweet and honest and I'm sure you'll create a lovely gift for Harmien. xx

So sorry to hear Pelle has been feeling ill. It is so hard when they are sick, and it creates such an awful feeling of helplessness in us. Hopefully he's feeling better soon.

What lovely gifts you got from Harmien, very fun. The piece you created for them is lovely as well, and how great you were able to personalize it the way you did. The LHN piece looked lovely done up too, I love her rabbits.
