That is until my dear brother showed me his cell phone (or his CranBerry or his StrawBerry, or whatever it is you call these contraptions) to prove something to me (I don’t know. Something about him being a Twit, or something. Like he needs to prove that to me. I’ve known that for some 36 years. [Just kidding: I adore my little brother]). Anyway, he asked me to read the words on the tiny, tiny screen and I found myself doing something I’d never done before (or at least, not that I was aware of): I kept the device at arm’s length to read what it said on the screen. It was at that exact moment that it hit me:
I need freaking reading glasses!
I rushed home and sat down with my stitching, and there was all the proof I needed: the stitches of Summer Basket just seemed to dance in front of my eyes, and Summer Basket is worked on 30 count fabric! Imagine me trying to stitch on 40 count! No wonder I seek refuge in crafts that require threads and needles actually visible to the naked eye! Now if only I can find the time to take myself to the optician’s, I should be right as rain and stitching like madYours blind as a batly,
Annemarie.

LOL! Mr V discovered he needed reading glasses on a routine check up last year and he was totally gobsmacked. He's always had excellent distance vision (unlike his short-sighted, lazy-eyed wife) and was fully expecting a clean bill of health...until the optician asked him to read from a hand-held card and he was holding it about an arm's length away ;) He now has really cute glasses for reading - hope you get sorted soon and can get back to doing what you enjoy.
lol! You're so funny! Go to the drug store at least. You can always just grab a pair of reading glasses there. I so know that feeling -- I use drug store reading glasses on top of my normal glasses. Looks funny, but it works! Ah for the days when I didn't need them......
Welcome to my age group!!
I bought a cheapy pair at the drugstore. They are 2.75 magnifiers. Didn't realize until my brother-in-law laughed at me that these are the STRONGEST they sell! Eventually I'll have to break the bank and get a real pair.
Aging...it sucks! I have been using "drug store" readers (really, they're the cute, fashionable ones I pick up other places) for a while now as magnification. I was astounded recently to realize it wasn't a convenience but a necessity--even for 28 count. I can't read the charts without them. :(
Speaking from experience the "Readers" will make a huge difference! Good luck and I hope your world soon comes into focus once again.
Dear batty Annemarie - welcome to my world! I've had glasses all my life practically and yeah, the reading part kicked in too so I have all kinds of glasses for all kinds of purposes! Good luck - I'm sure you'll find a really cute pair then you'll be stitching to the beat again!
LOL . . how funny :)
You will soon get your mojo back and be stitching up a storm.
I'm telling everyone I DON'T need reading glasses yet... but being slightly older than you, I realise that moment can't be far away anymore...
good luck, stitching rocks!
join the crowd It seems there are a lot of us out there that need reading glasses to enjoy our passion for cross stitch.
Hope you get back to your stitching!
Denise
I think I'm heading that way too. Sadly, mine will be bifocals.
Oh you silly girl - something so simple to bring back the stitching mojo. Run to the nearest pharmacy and get yourself some reading glasses. I wait with bated breath for those first stitches (hugs)
And welcome to the age of the mature woman.
And just wait until you misplace them all around the house and spend hours looking for them. The mind, she goes with the eyes.
Just go buy yourself a pair .f .50 or .75 reading glasses. They work just fine and are likely all you need. Oh, but then buy lots of them - you'll need them in every room of the house!
I'm so glad you figured out what was wrong! I've taken stitching hiatuses before, but never for that reason. And I ALWAYS wear my reading glasses to make it easier on my eyes! I figure the kinder I am to them now, the kinder they'll be to me later. I hope you get to the optician's office soon so you can stitch properly!!
Just went to the eye docs today myself. My script isn't bad enough to really warrant spending money on glasses, he recommended trying the readers first to see if that helps with my stitching - so off to the store I went!
Drug stores carry loads of reading glasses. If that's all you need, no reason to pay the eye doctor. And get bunches so you can have a pair in every room orrrr, get a nifty neck chain to attach and wear around your neck. It's the nifty 'I'm old now' look. It sucks!
Yep, Annemarie, this day comes for all of us sooner or later. You'll get used to it. The effects of gravity are especially unpleasant, but we'll save that lovely image for another day. :)
Oh Annemarie you do make me laugh, but commisserations on your spectacle adventure, although it would look fabulous on your pretty face, at least you only need them for reading:))
Am enjoying it here in NL, I don't think I want to go back LOL.
I love my magnifier! :D
They are called "Blackberry" and made right here in Waterloo about 8 km from my house! Nothing wrong with the eyes, you just need longer arms. Maria S.
